UFC 121 is nary but a few hours away. For the most part it seems like a pretty stacked card. You got Martin Kampmann vs. Jake Shields, Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz and of course the mother of all matches: Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez. My ears just exploded from the excitement.
Let’s talk about Lesnar and Velasquez.
Lesnar is a large mofo with unmovable piano bulk. He has an unstoppable double-leg takedown and hamfists to follow it up. If you watched the Lesnar-Couture fight, Lesnar basically stopped the fight by lifting his fist up an inch from Couture’s face and dropping it. That’s kinda weird seeing as how Lesnar is about a fifth the weight of a SmartCar. This is a grown man who fights like your little sister. And he’s champion after his 4th MMA fight. With that in mind, I’m rather inclined to say that Cain Velasquez is gonna to give Lesnar mad problems at UFC 121. Lesnar basically has two moves up his sleevies.
1) He is so heavy that even his wife can’t get him off (bazing!!!!!)
2) His double-leg takedown is unstoppable
Lesnar’s strengths really shone during his bout with Carwin. But then again, so did his weaknesses. Simply put, when you match Lesnar up against a hard-hitter like Carwin, magical things happen. Lesnar really sucked during the stand-up phase of the fight and was staggered by Carwin’s relentless left hooks. He was getting bloody and slowly began to look like that guy from MAD Magazine.
The thing however was that Carwin really had no cardio to speak of. Although in all fairness, he’s never needed it. As a result Carwin couldn’t finish the fight and was put on his back in round two. Lemme tell you that Cain Velasquez has no such cardio problems whatsoever. He’s like a madman. The man just doesn’t get tired. Watch his fights with Kongo, Ben Rothwell… Velasquez just takes his man down and annoys the shit out of each one with peppery punches and elbows. Watch his fight with Antonio Nogueira and see that Velasquez has very impressive striking power and striking technique.
Unlike Carwin, Velasquez has the cardio to finish the job on the ground. He also has the grappling and takedown defense to complement his striking. Stylistically, he’s a good answer to the stuff that Lesnar brings to the table.
Don’t let me down Velasquez. I don’t really like Lesnar because he hasn’t paid his dues and frankly he’s been kind of a douche during interviews.
