Whoa, whoa what? Fedor lost?
Russia’s greatest love machine pretty much got owned Saturday night when Antonio Big Foot Silva finally decided to make ends meet. Silva pretty much dominated the Russian and in the end closed his right eye with a fusillade of punches from mount. An upset to many fans in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, I was thinking to myself, “Wow, Fedor’s getting old.” Seriously, he’s getting freaking old.
Fedor Emelianenko was without a doubt a beast in his prime. I was watching some of the old Pride events and Fedor was just scary. His punches were unbelievably crisp and he was just powering out of Nogueira’s submission attempts. Oh yeah, he was fighting Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, back when the Brazilian was in his prime. The real Nogueira mind you, not the fake mini-me, the one that is so good at ripping arms and legs off that fans decided to call him Minotauro in honor of the Greek monster that tore people up for shits and giggles. Anyway in that fight, Fedor was bullying Minotauro the same way you’d rip milk money from that talking baby in The Simpsons.
This is why I’m so surprised that Fedor could lose at Strikeforce in this fashion. The fight only lasted two rounds. Winner of the first round was debatable. Fedor threw a scurry of punches at a frenetic pace. He landed several. Silva picked his shots and got a few clean ones as well. I’d have given it to Silva but really it wasn’t a deciding round. The second round of course was of otherworldly significance.
Fedor ate a clean right hand and got mounted. Silva threw his hands and Fedor gave up his back, gave back the mount and gave up his back again. Wow. I mean who does that to Fedor?
This was a major upset in every sense of the word.
Fedor Emelianenko is “The Last Emperor,” Pride Heavyweight Champion, WAMMA Heavyweight Champ. He took out Andrei Arlovski, Tim Sylvia, Antonio Nogueira (two times!), Mark Coleman, Mirko Cro Cop and even six Koreans in one sitting.
Antonio Silva… well he’s huge. He weighs close to 300 pounds and his victories include Andrei Arlovski (him too?!), Ricco Rodriguez and Eric Pele (another huge guy). Actually I’m wrong, he got knocked out by Pele. See that’s what I mean. I’m a little surprised/disappointed that he won. Silva’s string of victories while good, aren’t too impressive. On top of that he kinda looks like the creepy cousin that you longer invite to family outings.
So where does that leave us?
Ah yes.
The Future
I wonder what Fedor is thinking right now. We all know he’s no longer in his prime. He’s had some of the most impressive wins in Mixed Martial Arts and there’s nothing left to prove, at least I don’t think. But it would be a shame to see him retire so quickly.
“Yes, maybe, it’s the last time. Maybe it’s high time. Thanks for everything. I spent a great beautiful long sport life. Maybe it’s God’s will.”
- Fedor speaking about his possible retirement.
People get old and I don’t think Fedor has the guns to take out a young phenom like Cain Velasquez.
But that don’t matter. Fedor’s been the most dominant heavyweight fighter in the history of mixed martial arts and I don’t think anybody will leave the same impact, at least not for a long time.
See you around champ, you did great.
