So… it seems like Chael Sonnen has been suspended indefinitely.
This saddens me as the man is a trash-talking maniac. He cracks me up. He also had enough talent to lay a ground-and-pound clinic on Anderson Silva’s head.
On Wednesday, the California Athletic Commission ruled 4-1 to uphold Sonnen’s suspension meaning that Sonnen will be ineligible to obtain a fighting license.
Obviously I think it’s slightly overkill to put away one of the more promising fighters in the UFC’s middleweight division. Sonnen was on fire when he took on Anderson Silva. It’s actually quite selfish. If you think about it, you’re robbing millions of fans of the pleasure they get from watching Silva get owned.
Admittedly, Sonnen hasn’t done much to help his own case. After failing a post-fight drug test, he offered false testimony regarding his elevated testosterone levels and was even convicted of money laundering.
Sonnen will likely miss his chance of coaching The Ultimate Fighter 14 opposite Michael Bisping. Worse, his career might be over.
“If I don’t get my license today I’m effectively retired,” Sonnen said, “That came from the boss, Dana White.”
