What’s Next for Silva? Four Dream Fights That MUST Happen

Anderson Silva Vitor Belfort

Anderson Silva has nobody left to fight. On Saturday he reminded the world why he’s P4P and possibly the best fighter in existence when he knocked Yushin Okami out with jabs. This guy has dismantled challenger after challenger, moved up in weight twice to fight huge men and defended his belt 9 times in total. So I’m thinking, somebody should beat Silva up. It’d have to be a fight that fans want and it’d have to be taken up by fighters who know what they’re doing. I’ve thought of four. Please contribute.

Dan Henderson at 205

Dan Henderson Rich Franklin

Hendo is ripping people up at this point in his career. Did you watch his fight with Fedor Emelianenko? He was basically pretending to be a heavyweight. Hendo knocked Fedor out with his signature right hand and looked absolutely great doing it. Technically Henderson can move back down to the 185 division but it makes much more sense if he and Silva slugged it out at 205. First, Silva’s championship wouldn’t be on the line and since Hendo isn’t particularly interested in fighting at middleweight, a match at 205 means that even if Hendo wins, he doesn’t have to move down to the 185 division nor would Silva have to give up his belt. I think these little conditions make it easier for the fight to happen. Plus, Silva’s fought at LHW before. Either way, this match up is a convincing opportunity for a show of skills.

Georges St. Pierre

GSP vs Fitch

GSP is roughly in the same situation as Anderson Silva. Both have pretty much cleaned out their respective divisions. One of the things that cooled down this hypothetical super-fight was the fact that Jon Jones suddenly became a top-headliner. The other thing was that people were tired of GSP’s jab-to-win strategy, one which he used quite effectively (albeit boringly) against Jake Shields. If St. Pierre smashes Nick Diaz into baser particles this October (i.e without jabbing things to death) I think it’s a fight to be considered. We’ve moved past P4P discussions. Right now, both guys are perfect candidates for the honor of “greatest fighter in the history of MMA,” and this fight would most likely be the determining factor in the global consensus. I think this fight should take place at middleweight. GSP is already interested in making a permanent move up if this fight were to come to fruition. It also frees up the welterweight division and provides many fresh opponents for the Canuck to fight. Likewise if Silva kills GSP, it’d be a nice segway into A) retirement or B) a move to light heavyweight.

Winner of Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann

Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann

This is the likeliest of fighters that will face Silva. Sonnen is the loudest guy on the planet and he kicked Silva’s ass for four rounds back at UFC 117. Granted Silva had a broken rib but it flashed a glimpse of his weakness. It also proved to the world that he can in fact, be beaten. I suspect Silva would prefer to fight Sonnen whilst he’s in top condition for several reasons. First, to shut him up. Silva got remarkably pissed because of Sonnen’s cartoon-like approach to trash talking. Second, to prove that his first victory was no fluke. While Brian Stann is certainly a contender to the middleweight championship, he doesn’t possess the right weapons to take out Silva. Stann knocks people out in super time but his competitive advantage, striking, doesn’t quite stand at the same level as Silva’s. I haven’t seen Stann wrestle, although I know he has competent BJJ. The guy to beat Silva is a physically strong grappler and I’m not sure if Stann is the man to do that.

Jon Jones

Jones Flying Kick Bader

I think this fight is actually the least likely to happen but it’s the one I want the most. Jones is like a kid that loves to draw in his spare time. He thinks of moves and techniques that never happen in MMA. And then he uses them. It’s pretty incredible, this guy is 23 years old, LHW champion and he’s only three years into his career. If you want a guy to beat Silva, Jones is probably the sure-fire solution. For Silva, beating a young, hungry, super fighter like Jones is a perfect opportunity to cement his legacy.
